Timothy Cox
Timothy Cox is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and a Senior Visiting Scientist in the Department of Medicine University of Cambridge. He is a Life Fellow of Sidney Sussex College and continues to work as Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Lysosomal Disorders Unit). He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and Member of the Academia Europaea in 2020.
After qualifying in Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College, Cox trained in Oxford, the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Cox has held positions in internal medicine, gastroenterology and haematology. With a specialist clinical interest in inherited metabolic diseases, including lysosomal disease, his research involves gene therapy and studies in molecular pathogenesis with particular reference to the sphingolipidoses. After coming to Cambridge, Professor Cox founded the first UK MB/PhD programme in 1990. He has published numerous original research articles. Cox is also an Editor of the four-volume Oxford Textbook of Medicine and is now in its 6th Edition (2020).
